Sedation dentistry or sleep dentistry is a term referring to a method of dental treatment whereby the patient is administered some type of oral, intra-venous, intra-muscular or inhalation agent that alters the conscious state of the individual resulting in a light, medium or deep state state of consciousness. During this state the patient experiences a limited sensory reaction and reduced recollection of the procedure. Dr. Paris is certified to perform all procedure types, however, based on the patient's medical condition, he may utilize one of his staff anesthesiologists depending on length of the appointment and/or level of anxiety.
With this method of dentistry many procedures can be combined into a single appointment, saving the patient time off work or other important things. What used to take multiple visits over a long period of time can now be done in a single visit in a rather short period of time.
Sedation dentistry is also a great method for people who have a history of limited success to anesthesia (or are "hard to numb"). People who have been treated using sedation dentistry state that they have had profound anesthesia and have not felt anything, where in the past they complained to the dentist of having multiple uncomfortable sensations.
Some things we combine with sedation dentistry to further enhance the experience is using soothing music, covering our patients with a warm blanket, reduced lighting in the treatment rooms, and using one of our dental lasers, which further enhances their comfort.
Dr. Paris is compassionate with his patients regarding their fears with receiving dental care. He himself has had extensive dental treatment and is very sympathetic with his patients' anxieties and bad past experiences. No matter whether you've been on a current maintenance program or have not had any dental treatment for years, Dr. Paris will listen to you and be sensitive to your privacy.
