Sedation dentistry is often referred to as sleep dentistry. Sleep dentistry is a method of dental treatment whereby the patient is administered some type of oral, intra-venous, intra-muscular or inhalation agent that alters the conscious state of the individual resulting in a light, medium or deep state state of consciousness. While undergoing a "sleep" dental treatment, the patient has limited sensory awareness and ends up with a reduced recollection of the procedure.
Because the patient is sedated, sleep dentistry allows many procedures can be combined into a single appointment. What used to take multiple visits over a long period of time can now be done in a single visit.
Sleep dentistry is also a great treatment option for people who have a history of resistance to anesthesia (or are "hard to numb"). People who have been treated using sleep dentistry typically state that they had an excellent response to the anesthesia.
Some things we combine with sleep dentistry to further enhance the experience is using soothing music, covering our patients with a warm blanket, reduced lighting in the treatment rooms, and using one of our dental lasers, which further enhances their comfort.
